The Butler Institute of American Art
Youngstown, OH
The Butler Institute of American Art is one of the country's oldest and most distinguished museums dedicated exclusively to American art. Founded in 1919 and located in Youngstown, Ohio, the Butler holds a permanent collection of more than 22,000 works spanning four centuries of American artistic achievement, from colonial portraits and Hudson River landscapes to contemporary painting and sculpture. The museum's historic building complex serves as a regional cultural anchor, offering exhibitions, education programs, and community events.
A 2026 FCI Scoping Grant will support a technical assessment of the building envelope and gallery lighting to identify air-sealing, insulation, and lighting improvements that support a newly installed humidification system and reduce long-term energy demand. The study will provide the Butler with actionable recommendations for capital improvements that protect the collection and reduce operational costs.
