Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers

New Brunswick, NJ

The Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is one of the largest university art museums in the United States, holding a permanent collection of more than 60,000 works including a renowned collection of Russian and Soviet nonconformist art. Free to the Rutgers community and open to the public, the Zimmerli presents rotating exhibitions, educational programming, and research opportunities that serve students, scholars, and regional audiences. The museum is housed in a 70,000-square-foot purpose-built building constructed in 1983.

A 2026 FCI Scoping Grant will support a feasibility study to identify high-impact infrastructure upgrades with goals for reducing energy use and emissions by at least 30 percent by 2031, while maintaining the museum's preservation environment. The study will provide Zimmerli with a technical and financial roadmap for capital improvements that balance collections stewardship with ambitious sustainability targets.
