The Center for Photography at Woodstock
Kingston, NY
Founded in 1977, the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) is an artist-driven and community-based organization dedicated to understanding ourselves and our social context through photography and visual culture. Its mission is to effect social change through innovative and inspiring programs that engage communities across photography and visual arts. In 2022, CPW relocated to Kingston, New York, to engage with a more diverse community that matched its programming and strategic goals.
A 2024 FCI Scoping Grant supported a comprehensive assessment of CPW's new home, the 40,000-square-foot Van Slyke & Horton Cigar factory in Kingston's Midtown Arts District. The assessment evaluated the feasibility of various sustainability options for the historic building, including HVAC improvements, geothermal wells, and rooftop solar to provide the technical foundation for a subsequent phase of sustainable capital investment.
A 2026 FCI Technical Assistance Grant will support production of schematic designs for a new HVAC system, geothermal or all-electric, partially powered by a rooftop solar array. The project will advance geothermal test-well analysis, system design, and solar engineering toward implementation-ready schematics ahead of its 50th anniversary in 2027.
