Blank Forms

Brooklyn, NY

Established in 2016, Blank Forms is a nonprofit organization supporting emerging and historically significant artists who produce work across disciplines, often rooted in traditions of experimental and creative music. Through collaborative commissions, exhibitions, publications, and archival and estate projects, Blank Forms establishes new frameworks to preserve, nurture, and present art, while building platforms for practices underrepresented in art's commercial, institutional, and historical fields. With the opening of a gallery space in 2020, followed by an auxiliary venue for performances and talks in 2021, Blank Forms's platform has continued to grow steadily, encompassing exhibitions, performances, publishing, and archival initiatives.

As part of an adaptive reuse plan for a 7,000-square-foot ground-floor space in Brooklyn, Blank Forms aligned its collaborative artistic approach with a commitment to energy efficiency and climate action. A 2024 FCI Scoping Grant evaluated the potential for energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems.

A 2026 FCI Technical Assistance Grant will support the design and installation of a full LED lighting system with occupancy sensors, daylight-responsive controls, and supporting electrical infrastructure upgrades. The project is expected to reduce lighting energy consumption by 50–65 percent, bring Blank Forms's new home into compliance with NYC energy codes (e.g., Local Law 97), and provide a replicable model for peer nonprofit arts organizations converting commercial space to conservation-appropriate exhibition spaces.
