Mattress Factory
Pittsburgh, PA
The Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known internationally for its site-specific installations created by artists in residence. Founded in 1977, the museum occupies a complex of historic buildings in Pittsburgh's Mexican War Streets neighborhood, presenting permanent and temporary works that have fundamentally shaped the discourse around installation and immersive art. The Mattress Factory's approach of inviting artists to make work in response to specific spaces over extended periods has made it one of the most distinctive institutions in contemporary art.
MF is planning a major renovation to mark its 50th anniversary. A 2026 FCI Scoping Grant will support a comprehensive energy assessment of the museum's two core Pittsburgh buildings, establishing a baseline and phased implementation roadmap. The assessment will identify priority capital investments for reducing energy consumption and emissions across the museum's historic and purpose-built spaces.
