The Crucible

Oakland, CA

The Crucible is a nonprofit industrial arts education organization in Oakland, California, offering classes, studio space, and exhibitions focused on fire-based and industrial art forms including glass, metalsmithing, ceramics, blacksmithing, and welding. Founded in 1999, The Crucible serves thousands of adults and youth annually through workshops, after-school programs, and open-access studio programming, occupying a 68,000-square-foot facility in West Oakland. The organization's industrial-scale studios create both significant energy demands and meaningful opportunities for operational transformation.

A 2026 FCI Scoping Grant will support a comprehensive facilities and operations assessment to identify electrification, HVAC efficiency, and air-quality improvements across the organization's heat-intensive studio spaces. The study will develop a phased capital roadmap addressing the unique energy demands of glass, metal, fire, and ceramics studios, establishing a clear path toward reduced fossil fuel dependence and improved indoor air quality.
