Northwestern University, The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art
Evanston, IL
The Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois is a leading academic art museum dedicated to presenting exhibitions, scholarship, and educational programs that illuminate the enduring relevance of art across cultures and time periods. Founded in 1980, the Block Museum holds a permanent collection of more than 6,000 works spanning four millennia and presents dynamic temporary exhibitions that serve students, faculty, and the broader public. As a free museum on Northwestern's campus, the Block plays an important role in fostering engagement with the visual arts in higher education.
A 2026 FCI Scoping Grant will support a feasibility study evaluating local electric boiler installation as an alternative to the museum's reliance on central plant steam, plus a UV protection assessment for the museum's glass-enclosed lobby to reduce HVAC load. The study will provide the Block with actionable data to support a major transition away from fossil-fuel-based heating infrastructure.
