The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Boston, MA

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (ISGM) opened in 1903 and is a Boston landmark dedicated by its founder “for the education and enjoyment of the public forever.” Distinctive among American museums, the ISGM’s architecture, installations, and garden courtyard together constitute a singular work of art; its collection of 19,000 objects including masterworks by Botticelli, Titian, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Sargent spans many corners of the globe and thousands of years of human history. The historic Venetian-inspired palazzo was complemented in 2012 by a new wing designed by Renzo Piano, adding purpose-built spaces for exhibition, performance, and community engagement. The museum’s historic and contemporary exhibitions, performances, lectures, and community programs draw 425,000 visitors each year.

A 2021 FCI Implementation Grant supported installation of LED lighting across gallery spaces to support conservation, preservation, and accessibility while increasing energy efficiency. A 2025 FCI Technical Assistance Grant enabled ISGM to undertake a comprehensive energy and sustainability assessment of an off-site building being renovated for collections storage. HVAC systems, electrical infrastructure, and building envelope were evaluated while modeling greenhouse gas emissions and identifying decarbonization strategies. The initiative is grounded in ISGM’s original vision of uniting art and nature, reflecting the museum's commitment to sustainability and its leadership in building a climate-resilient cultural sector.

A 2026 FCI Implementation Grant will support the installation of a 52 kW rooftop solar array to the ISGM’s off-site building comprising 122 high-efficiency panels. The system is expected to provide 100 percent of the facility's energy needs.
