The Huntington

San Marino, CA

The Huntington is one of the world's great research and cultural institutions, encompassing a research library, art collections including major holdings of British and American art, and 130 acres of botanical gardens in San Marino, California. Founded in 1919, The Huntington receives more than 600,000 visitors annually and serves the scholarly community through research collections and fellowship programs. The institution is committed to sustainability as a steward of both cultural and natural heritage.

A 2022 FCI Technical Assistance Grant funded an energy master plan initiative including assessment of the 47,000 square feet of conditioned space. This resulted in a 2023 FCI Implementation Grant which supported replacement of a manual, mostly pneumatic and outdated building management system with an integrated automated, efficient one. The system helps support baseline environmental conditions of gallery space.

A 2026 FCI Implementation Grant will support a pilot deployment of an advanced building management system in two campus buildings, testing more flexible environmental conditions consistent with Bizot Green Protocol approaches to collections care. Expected to reduce energy consumption by 15–50 percent across the pilot, the project will inform a potential campus-wide rollout demonstrating that world-class art preservation and meaningful environmental improvement can be achieved together.
