Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego

San Diego, CA

The Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego (ICA San Diego) is a platform for experimental art and learning. ICA San Diego is a non-collecting institution that supports contemporary artists while fostering inclusive, dialogue-based engagement that reflects and responds to diverse communities.

ICA San Diego opened its doors in September 2021 as a result of the merger between two local institutions, Lux Art Institute (1998) and the San Diego Art Institute (1941). As part of its long-term sustainability goals, ICA San Diego is launching Off the Grid, a scoping and planning initiative to transition entirely to self-sufficient, renewable energy sources across both of its campuses. The organization is also interested in participating in the County of San Diego’s broader clean energy goals—the board of government-run San Diego Community Power committed to the County of San Diego using 100% renewable energy by 2035. FCI funding will support development of a detailed assessment of how much energy ICA San Diego consumes in order to determine the best sources of renewable energy to meet the needs for future technical assistance and implementation phases of the project.

Milestones

  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of current energy consumption at both campuses

  • Hire consultants to identify renewable energy solutions tailored to site-specific needs

  • Produce a detailed report outlining energy usage, challenges, and opportunities

  • Develop an actionable plan for future off-grid renovations and upgrades

  • Serve as a model for sustainability in arts institutions through energy independence
