Vermont Studio Center

Johnson, VT

Vermont Studio Center (VSC) is the country's largest international artist residency program, located in Johnson, Vermont. Founded in 1984, VSC hosts more than 600 visual artists and writers annually from across the United States and around the world, offering fully supported residency time in a historic campus of studios, living spaces, and community facilities along the Gihon River. VSC's Johnson campus, including historic structures from the nineteenth century is integral to the residency experience, and the organization is committed to resilient, climate-conscious stewardship of these irreplaceable facilities.

A 2026 FCI Implementation Grant will support climate-resilient restoration of the historic Bradley House (originally built 1819) and construction of a new visual arts studio replacing Kahn Barn studios destroyed in the 2023 flood. High-efficiency electric heat pumps replace the building's biomass heating system, expected to achieve a near-100 percent reduction in annual carbon emissions from energy use—advancing VSC's flood recovery while establishing a model for climate-resilient historic building restoration in Vermont.
