Steven Myron Holl Foundation

Rhinebeck, NY

The Steven Myron Holl Foundation (SMHF) aims to inform the public about urgent issues in art and architecture, stimulate critical and theoretical exchanges of ideas in today's cultural, political, economic, and technological contexts, and educate new ways of thinking about the arts, design, and ecology. Founded by acclaimed architect Steven Holl, SMHF's programs intersect the arts, design, sustainability, and ecology. The Foundation's initiatives include exhibitions, education initiatives, publications, and digital platforms.

Supported by a 2024 FCI Catalyst Grant, SMHF installed high-tech solar panels on the roof of its Architectural Archive and Research Library building and created a demonstration site for ecological architecture at its ‘T’ Space Commons facility, incorporating a smart green roof, geothermal heating and cooling, recyclable aluminum cladding, and high-tech operable skylights.

A 2026 FCI Implementation Grant will support the replacement of an oil-fired furnace with a 3-ton ground-source heat pump and 500-foot vertical closed-loop well at the Foundation's ‘T’ Space Commons. Expected to reduce heating-related GHG emissions by 80 percent annually, the project advances the Foundation's long-term goal of a net-zero facility and provides a compelling demonstration of sustainable architecture at an institution founded by one of the field's most celebrated practitioners.
