San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

San Francisco, CA

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is one of the country's leading modern and contemporary art museums and the largest modern art museum in the United States. Founded in 1935, SFMOMA holds a collection of more than 33,000 works of modern and contemporary art and is housed in a landmark building in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. SFMOMA has a longstanding commitment to sustainability and is working toward significant reductions in its operational carbon footprint.

A 2023 FCI Scoping Grant supported development of a comprehensive Sustainability Roadmap, establishing goals and targets across energy consumption, carbon emissions, water use, waste, and procurement. This work built on SFMOMA's existing sustainability achievements including LEED Gold certification for its building expansion, a 46 percent reduction in energy use, a 60 percent decrease in potable water use, early adoption of all-LED gallery lighting, and participation in the Culture Over Carbon sector-wide benchmarking initiative. The project also supported compliance with San Francisco's Existing Buildings Energy Ordinance, including energy benchmarking and life cycle assessment of embodied carbon from exhibition renovations.

A 2026 FCI Implementation Grant will support upgrades to HVAC, lighting, and humidification systems at SFMOMA's Collections Center, including rooftop heat pump installation and transition from fluorescent to LED lighting. The project is expected to reduce facility energy consumption by 30–50 percent and transition the Center's climate systems away from fossil fuels.
