Minneapolis Institute of Art

Minneapolis, MN

The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) is one of the country's leading encyclopedic art museums, holding a permanent collection of more than 100,000 works spanning 5,000 years of world art. Founded in 1883, Mia offers free general admission and serves more than 700,000 visitors annually, providing wide access to a collection of exceptional depth and breadth. The museum is deeply committed to sustainability and has established ambitious goals for reducing its carbon footprint in alignment with Minneapolis's broader climate commitments.

A 2021 FCI Implementation Grant added variable frequency to four existing motors in older air handling units in the HVAC system serving Mia's galleries. The new units reduced Mia's electricity usage by more than 6 percent.

A 2026 FCI Implementation Grant will support Mia’s ongoing work to reduce its carbon emissions, which produces cost savings for the institution and environmental benefits for the community.
