Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

Kalamazoo, MI

The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA) is the leading visual arts institution in southwest Michigan, offering a permanent collection, rotating exhibitions, an accredited art school, and community programs that serve tens of thousands of visitors and students annually. Founded in 1924, the KIA occupies a landmark mid-century modern building in downtown Kalamazoo and is deeply committed to making the visual arts accessible to all members of its community. The museum's collection spans American and European art with strengths in nineteenth-century American painting, photography, and prints and drawings.

An FCI Implementation Grant will support a comprehensive modernization of four aging air handling units serving the KIA's galleries, collection vault, and public spaces, including high-efficiency fans, controls modernization, and improved filtration. The project is expected to reduce GHG emissions by 9 percent annually, while improving environmental stability for the collection and visitor comfort throughout the museum.
