Museum of Art and Light
Manhattan, KS
The Museum of Art + Light (MoA+L) in Manhattan, Kansas, is dedicated to inspiring curiosity and community through the transformative power of art and technology. As a dynamic and forward-thinking cultural institution, MoA+L fosters innovation, inclusivity, and education while cultivating a deep sense of place and environmental stewardship. In November of 2024, MoA+L completed the new construction and renovation of its 100,000-square-foot spaces.
MoA+L has plans to install 440 solar panels on two of its three building roofs. This strategic project represents the first phase of MoA+L’s long-term climate action plan and reflects the museum’s growing commitment to sustainability and energy independence. By integrating renewable energy into its infrastructure, MoA+L reinforces its role as a civic leader and innovator—demonstrating how art institutions can model sustainable solutions while enriching public understanding of climate-conscious practices. It will also serve as a catalyst for MoA+L to pursue further reductions in energy use and fossil fuel dependence, aligning the museum’s operational practices with its educational mission.
Milestones
Offset approximately 19 percent of the museum’s annual energy usage (304,680 kWh of electricity)
Generate $1.65 million in incentives over thirty year
MoA+L will work with either the manufacturer or installer to determine the best possible methods for disposing of "solar panel waste" or "photovoltaic waste” through companies such as Cleanlites in Spartanburg, SC, or determining a marketplace for positive scrap value.
